HEALING

FOOD
As a teenager, I firmly believed that exercising was the only form of "health". I knew that nutrition played a role, but I believed I could work off any calories that I consumed. When I first started taking nutrition classes in college, I realized how powerful nutrition was, and how healing it could be.

I originally planned on becoming a high school teacher. My first semester of college, I did a complete 180 and quickly changed to nutrition and dietetics. I don't think I was completely wrong with my intention of pursuing a career in education, because deep down I knew I wanted to be a teacher...I just wasn't aware that I would still become one after changing majors. Dietitians, nurses, doctors, and the rest of the healthcare team, all have the ability to teach and heal. Every single person we interact with is a new learning opportunity for the both of us.
I spent time in college volunteering throughout various areas of the community. I went to schools to educate the youth and pass out healthy snacks. The last semester of college I volunteered at the Farmer's Market. I also spent a lot of time with the Sports Nutrition program where I made protein smoothies, nutritious snacks, pre- and post- workout/game meals, and educated athletes on proper nutrition.

Throughout grad school, I have worked in an intensive cardiac rehabilitation clinic where I spend time learning and working with the Registered Dietitian. I have learned how to implement a heart healthy diet into the cardiac rehab program and how to educate the patients on the basics of label reading and cooking at home.

I truly believe I have found my calling in educating and empowering others to find and use the healing powers of nutrition. Community nutrition and wellness both interest me. One of my goals is to create a community-based wellness program that focuses on nutrition and yoga/exercise that will be introduced to the youth, but can also accommodate for every age group.
